What is Poke?

Poke, at it’s most basic, is raw fish marinated in soy sauce, spices and sesame oil. It is then mixed with chopped onions, topped with sesame seeds and served over rice. It has hundreds of varieties using every kind of fish you can imagine. Noble House currently carries both Ahi Poke, California Poke and occasionally vegetarian Portobello Poke. Keep an eye out for specials featuring other types of Poke such as Salmon. We even have a “secret” poke menu, so don’t be afraid to ask.
The History of Poke
Poke has been a traditional staple food to Hawaiian people. It was used to provide cheap and easy food for field workers. It has been described as the “original melting pot” as it evolved over the years adapting elements of Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and even American culture. It may surprise you, but the version of Poke served over rice at Noble House isn’t even the traditional version.
The Original Poke
Poke was known as Aku and consisted of Skipjack, a cross between a tuna and a mackerel, Ogo, a red and green seaweed, shoyu sauce (soy sauce) and Hawaiian sea salt. Other additions came later such as the Poke being served over rice and condiments such as Ponzu Sauce and spicy mayo.
